Happy Halloween!

We’re all abuzz!  Wren’s been busy sewin’, an’ we’ve been busy decoratin’, an’ today is Halloween!!!  (Juniper says it’s “Samhain,” though, an’ we’re calling it all wrong? An’ we need a bonfire?  I dunno bout that.  Littles are…well…little.  They might get hurt near a big fire, since we don’t got a good setup here like Smidge’s got.)  Anyhow!  We’re still settin’ stuff up.  As soon as it all seems done an’ ready, there’s somethin’ else inna corner that really has to be put out too.  I haven’t had much time for pictures, but Wren made me’n’Cooper stand still while we were tryin’ on the costumes she made.  An’ they’re awesome!  Cuz we’re twins, she made us twin outfits.  We’re Victorian steampunk monster hunters.  I forgot to grab my sword for the picture.  I’m sure we’ll take more later.  Wren’s the best, though.  I think she has fun makin’ costumes!

If I don’t get back to share more pics today (an’ I might not, cuz it’s gonna be B.U.S.Y.!), hope everybody has a super fun, spooky cool Halloween!!

(Falcon says we need a small black cat.  He cracks me up!  I’ll show you why later)

Halloween Decorations

Cuz Wren’s been awful busy makin’ costumes, an’ I’m not too good with sewin’, I figured I’d work on decorating up the main room for Halloween!  Cooper an’ Falcon said they’d help.  Meikiko wanted to help too, but Wren couldn’t get her to take her costume off, so she had to sit out.  But that’s ok.  She can help with other stuff.

We cleaned up the room some first, cuz it was fulla dust an’ dirt.  That part wasn’t so fun.  But I knew Wren would say it was important.  Personally, I thought maybe alla dusty stuff would make it look creepier.  Cooper said that was just a lazy thought.

Alla stuff was packed away, so we pulled it outta storage an’ set stuff up.  I found this awesome tin with a ouija board onna front, an’ a creepy coffin, an’ thought the corner over by our stove would be good.  Riley tried to help, but mostly she just barked atta coffin.  I love Riley.  She’s a good guard pup.

Falcon focused onna middle, using some cut-out pieces for decoratin’.  He found a cauldron, too, an’ those awesome eyeballs!  Oh, I remember those!  Wren thought she’d scare me with ’em last year.  They are pretty creepy, tho.  I wish they glowed inna dark or somethin’.  We could turn off alla lights an’ watch ’em watchin’ us.  Falcon’s fox wasn’t too sure what to think of it, even without it glowin’, so I think that means it’s spooky enough.

An’ Cooper…well, he kinda struggled a bit.  He put some li’l pieces out inna other corner, where we got chairs, but he said the skeleton didn’t look right sittin’ there, an’ it kept fallin’ down, an’ he just didn’ know what he outta do with it.

So I popped it inna different place, an’ I think it looks all right.

I’ll probably move it again later.  For sure, some Little’s gonna wanna hide inna coffin.  I hope they do!  It makes a frightful sound, an’ I bet it’s gonna make ’em all jump.  They’re so cute when they get scared, cuz their eyes get all big, an’ then they get all angry cuz I giggle.  I can’t help it!  They’re just so cute!

But that was it.  I told Cooper we needed more.  If we could find some spider things, an’ rig up somethin’ so it’d look like cobwebs, that’d be neat.  An’ maybe if we could make somethin’ look like a science experiment gone wrong, that’d be cool too.  But “gone wrong” sounds kinda like “make a mess,” an’ I’m not too sure Wren would like that much.  Plus we need snacks an’ candy an’ things.  Apples too.

Oh gumdrops!  An’ pumpkins!

“We need pumpkins ’bout this big.  At least this big.  Bunches of ’em.”

Cooper just laughed.  “It’s going to be ok, Kestrel.  We’ll find pumpkins.  Maybe not quite that big, though.  That’s about as big as Meikiko.”

I can’t wait.  It’s gonna be so much fun!

We got some rain!  An’, cuz there was rain, now there’s some mushrooms!  They’re pretty.

They’re growin’ good, too.  That makes me happy.  Wren says I shouldn’t eat ’em, an’ I’m ok with that.  There’s lots of poisonous ones out there.  I don’t wanna make my tummy hurt.  But it’s nice seein’ ’em when I go walkin’ inna woods, like they’re parta what makes everything feel balanced again.

Inna spring, when it rained an’ rained an’ rained, there were so many mushrooms all over.  They grew inna ground.  They grew onna trees.  They grew inna corner.  They were growin’ onna wall.  That was too many mushrooms.  That wasn’t balanced either, like the time when all the world had was black dust where ‘shrooms once were.

No shrooms?  Not good.  Too many shrooms?  Not good.  Just enough shrooms, so the forest can recycle back to dirt?  Yeah, that’s all good.

Balance.  I like that idea.  Gonna keep thinkin’ on it some.

Orionids 2017

Inna middle of the night, when it was full dark, Cooper an’ me snuck out.  (Riley stayed curled up with Meikiko).  Cooper said he had somethin’ he wanna show me.  There was gonna be a meteor shower called the Orionids.  I was yawnin’ an’ havin’ a devil of a time wakin’ up, but I do like an adventure.  He had a blanket, an’ I helped him spread it out on the grass, which was kinda dewy an’ damp, then we flopped down an’ looked up.  It was super dark.

Meteors are like fallin’ stars.  Only they ain’t really stars.  They’re like…star dust?  This one was from the tail of a comet called Halley’s comet.  I think that’s good.  I don’t wanna think about stars fallin’ outta sky, or burnin’ up so they won’t be up there, twinklin’.  But it’s just li’l rocks an’ comet dust brighting up as it comes inna our atmosphere.

Then I got worried that maybe the rocks’d hit people inna head.  You ever been hit inna head by a falling acorn? Ouch!  I didn’t wanna think about a rock gettin’ thrown from cloud-height.  But Cooper laughed an’ said the rocks would be burned up before they ever hit anybody, so there wasn’t much to worry about.  He said that sometimes giant rocks do get through, an’ sometimes they don’t burn up alla way, an’ when they hit the earth, they make big, giant craters, an’ sometimes they do all sortsa damage.  I got worried all over again, cuz he said that’s what happened to kill alla dinosaurs.

But Cooper promised it was nothin’ like that.  There weren’t gonna be giant fallin’ rocks, or even tiny li’l pebbles.  There’d just be bright lights flashin’ cross the sky.

It took a bit.  My eyes weren’t ready for dark-watchin’, an’ I kept seein’ hope-stars goin’ cross. Cooper’d gasp, an’ point up, but I’d have a hard time figurin’ out where he was pointin’, an’ it’d be gone.  Have you ever tried to figure out where inna sky someone’s pointin’, when your only reference is another point of light?

But they were there!  An’ I started seein’ ’em too.  It was like watchin’ magic happen.  Some of ’em were just quick flashes, but others made a nice, slow, long burn cross the sky.  We didn’t see any real big things like fireballs (an’ I’m kinda glad about that!), but I made a lotta wishes.  Then I made wishes for my dolli-sisters that weren’t out there too.  Then I started storin’ up more wishes, in case I needed some extra magic later on.  I kinda wish the fallin’ stars made actual magic powder, cuz I would’ve pocketed loads of it, but there’s plenty in my heart!

I did find out my camera doesn’t take good night pictures, so I can’t put any up of what we really saw, but I found someone’s pretty awesome photo onna internet.

Hope some others got out an’ watched the star show, too!

We’re gettin’ kinda crowded.

None of us mind, but sometimes blankets get stolen.  Inna summer, that’s all good.  If it’s hot, nobody minds losin’ a blanket or a sheet.  But inna winter, brrr!  It’s no good wakin’ up inna mornin’, shiverin’ cuz the fire’s burned down low an’ cold came creepin’ inna window.

We’ve been talkin’ bout how we could fix it.  There’s not much room for another bed inna room.  Meikiko’s got a tiny sleep-sack, but she’d be onna floor then, an’ there’s bad drafts down there.  Plus she’s tiny.  She doesn’t take much room anyhow.  Wren’s thinkin’ maybe we outta get bunk beds?  There’d be two beds in one space then, an some could sleep up top an’ some in the bottom.  Or maybe we gotta build an expanding onna house.  I dunno how to do that though.  But we could try.

Meikiko thinks we outta sleep in hammocks, an’ hang ’em onna wall or get a hammock-post to tie to for the middle with bolts inna wall.  It’d be like bunk beds, cuz there’s be hammocks over hammocks.  But we’d miss out on keepin’ each other warm!  Great inna summer, maybe not so much inna winter?

If none of that works, though, Wren says she can knit individual blankets for alla we.  That way nobody’s stealin’ inna night without meanin’ to.  An’ I outta make Riley a li’l puppy bed too so she has somewhere warm for her.  But it’s kinda nice, havin’ a sweet warm pup curled up nearby.  Maybe she’ll just keep sleepin’ with me.

Finally! I woke up inna mornin’ an’ stepped outside an’ BAM! I hadda close my eyes an’ open my arms an’ hug alla cold air like it was a long-lost cuzzin. It was amazing! Winter is coming after all. Weather’s been somethin’ crazy, with fires an’ floods an’ hurricanes an’ skies lit up yellowy-red, but winter ain’t gonna desert us yet.

There’s this plant growin’ outside.  It’s neat.  It has huge yellow-orange flowers an’   great big leaves.  They’re kinda hairy (the leaves).  An’ there are spikes on the vine.  An’ li’l creepy tendril-y things.  It’s neat!  Walkin’ under the leaves makes alla world turn into a forest.

Cooper says it’s a pumpkin plant.  Dunno why it’s growin’ here.  We didn’t plant pumpkins inna spring.  It doesn’t have any pumpkins, tho, just big leaves an’ pretty flowers.  But I’m gonna keep an eye on it, cuz Halloween’s comin’, an’ we kinda need a pumpkin for carving.  I hope alla Littles get to come over for a party again!  Wren’s workin’ on somethin’ special for Meikiko, but neither one of ’em’ll tell me what she’s makin’.  Guess I gotta wait to find out!  I’m excited.

Hope everybody’s bein’ safe an’ gettin’ ready for Halloween.  Gotta watch out for extra monsters cuz there’s loads more magic inna air.  Falcon says there’s news bout lots of fires onna West coast, in California, an’ I’m gettin’ worried that maybe there’s a dragon hoarde?  Fightin’ one dragon’s tough, but a hoarde…that’d take a whole buncha hunters workin’ together.
