We gotta new friend.  Her name’s Perdita.  Wren says it means “little lost one,” but I dunno if that’s true.  I mean, if she’s here, she’s found, ain’t she?  So she ain’t lost no more.  But I guess a name’s a name, an’ it ain’t gonna change who you are now no matter what it meant before.

Anyhow, Perdita’s pretty an’ blue, an’ she’s gotta bell, so it’s hard to lose her now.  Grammy Happy sent her to our house.  I think she’s gonna go help with Dolli Lane an’ alla Littles too, but she’s gotta work up some nerve first (she ain’t worked with Littles before).  She helps me walk Riley inna morning so she gets to know what’s round here.  She said she came from a group of bears called “Adventure Bears,” an’ now we’re parta her adventure.  That’s pretty cool, cuz I do like adventures.

So Perdita an’ me were walkin’ Riley inna mornin’, an’ we found somethin’ inna ground.  A hole. A couple holes, actually, sorta together in an area.  An’, yeah, there’s lotsa different holes what might be inna ground:  golf holes, sink holes, man holes, drain holes, pot holes, snake holes, worm holes, fox holes, mole holes…  But it wasn’t none of those holes.  Since Perdita’s an adventure bear, I asked her if she’d seen ’em before.

“Hmm…” Perdita said, in her slow, thinkin’ voice.  Most everythin’ she does is kinda slow.  But that’s ok, cuz she’s careful too.  “No,” she said. “I haven’t seen those.”

I hadn’t either.  We stood, starin’ atta holes for a bit, thinkin’ bout what mighta maybe made ’em.  Maybe a baby giant playin’ onna pogo stick?  Or maybe they’re tent pegs for a giant’s pup tent?  Maybe there’s giants inna woods!  I started lookin’ round a bit through the trees, wonderin’ if giants come out at sunrise or at sunset.

Riley had different ideas, though.  She wanted to know more bout the hole too.  So she got closer…an’ closer…

Then, alla sudden, yank! snap! Riley pulled the leash outta my hand and popped herself inna hole!

“Riley!” I cried.  An’ I was all sortsa panicked.  What if she went inna hole but never came back out?  What if she came back out an’ ran off? What if whatever made the hole was down in the hole wasn’t a silly giant but a mean monster an’ it ate her?  Then Riley’s li’l feet disappeared inna dirt, an’ all I could see was her leash rope.  Then it too slid away.  I wanna grab it tight, but if Riley was gettin’ pulled, pullin’ back might get her choked or somethin’.

Perdita put her paw on my arm an’ said I hadda calm down.  Riley was gonna be ok.  Even if there was somethin’ down inna dirt, she was strong an’ a good fighter an’ she’d be ok.  At least, I think Perdita said alla that.  It was in my head, at least.  I kept callin’ for Riley, askin’ her to come back.

Then the ground moved, an’ I held my breath.  Somethin’ black was wrigglin’ outta dirt.

Oh, my gumdrops! It was Riley’s nose!  I grabbed Riley up an’ held her close.  No more holes.  No more holes, please.

Perdita used a stick to try an’ find out more bout the hole, like maybe how deep it was or whether there was somethin’ down in there.

But she didn’t find much.  I was too worried after Riley’s disappearin’ act to explore holes more, so we headed back home.  We’ll go walkin’ other places where there aren’t holes tomorrow.  An’ maybe Perdita’n’me’ll come back sometime without Riley to learn more bout the holes.  But not today.  That was enough for today.

Riley: Thanks, Smidge!

Smidge did an awful fine job, keep in’ Riley safe for me. I still dunno how I ain’t seen her jump outta bag. Good thing I gotta great cuzzin!

I think Smidge really liked havin’ a pet. She kept askin Grammy Happy if she could maybe have a pet. An’ Grammy Happy said “Hmm…” an’ “Not yet…” an’ even “No.” Cuz Grammy Happy’s smart. Even tho I kept sayin’ Smidge could do it, seein’ how she grew up her flamingoes from feet an’ took care of her bay tree. Pets are different. They need ya alla time, not just when it’s easy.

But Smidge did mighty good for bout a week. Then alla weather round here got hot. I mean, hot like dragon fire’s goin’ in when you breathe an’ hot like did someone dump a bucket on your head when you walk out your door cuz you start sweatin’ an’ can’t stop. Smidge looked outside an’ realized she didn’t wanna walk a dog inna heat like that. Gumdrops, I almost didn’t wanna do it either! But I love Riley. When Smidge called to say she was done havin’ fun with  keepin’ a puppy, I hurried over an’ brung her home. Thanked Smidge over an’ over for keepin’ her safe.

But gettin’ Riley back, an huggin’ on her soft, wiggly body…yea. I don’t mind walkin’ in alla heat, or out when it’s rainin’ or anytime it’s bad weather. As long as Riley’s safe an’ happy, I am too.

Love ya, pup!

I was super glad to see Wren, an’ Wren was super glad to see me.  She sat an’ listened to alla what I’d done, long inna night, an’ she kept givin’ me hugs like maybe I was gonna disappear again.  I love Wren.

Meikiko was out with new boy, Falcon.  I guess he’s teachin’ her how to ride a pony?  Um…when did we get a pony?!  An’ how come I ain’t seen it?  I gotta go check this out!  Wren says the pony isn’t ours, that it belongs to somebody down the Lane, but still!  I’ve been all up an’ down our Lane, but there’s never been a pony before.  It’s awful neat that one came in, I guess while I was visitin’ Pip or Smidge.

I’m gonna get out an’ visit ponies soon!

Back to Virginia

Before we hadda leave Washington (cuz Pip an’ Amalynn an’ Aunty Glenda were comin’ back to Virginia with me!), we sat down an’ watched  a video an’ ate popcorn an’ did sleepover things.

Movie Night

Flyin’ back wasn’t so bad.  Onna way out, we got extra-checked by security, cuz they thought…well, I dunno what they really thought, but we sure got extra checked.  We was poked an’ prodded, an’ they made us lift up our arms an’ stuff.  Nothin’ like that happened onna way back, tho.  We just watched clouds outta window, an’ talked, an’ were glad we’d have more time spendin’ together until they gotta go back home to Washington.

In Virginia, there was a lot of work with alla beans cuz they were cleanin’ outta house an’ moving things.  I kinda sorta ignored alla that.  I think Snip paid more attention.  But we girls just hung out together an’ had fun.  Gramma Happy’s house has a lotta cousins now, an’ they gotta nice room set up with bunk beds (bunk beds!!  Wren, we gotta get some bunk beds.  They are super duper cool!!)  Amalynn an’ me hadda idea first, an’ we tested it out…

Upside Down

Hehe!  Yep, the world upside down was super cool!!  It looked all wonky an’ weird!  An’ it just made us giggle.  I called over to Pip an’ Smidge, invitin’ em to try it out too!

Upside Down Everybody

Havin’ alla we upside down just made me laugh more.  It was awesome good!  But it gave Pip a headache after a bit, so she an’ Smidge hopped up.  Then they found out that, cuz they’re short, an’ the mattress is squishy, they could jump onna bed while we was upside down, an’ everybody could be havin’ fun!  (without gettin’ a headache)

Jumping On Bed

An’ then, I guess cuz I’d been in Virginia for a bit but hadn’t come home, Cooper came lookin’ for me.  Poor Cooper.  Grammy Happy said he hadda stay inna room with alla boys, an’ I think he got kinda overwhelmed.  He likes history an’ books an’ stuff, an’ they was all talkin’ to him bout…well…I dunno. He wouldn’t say. But it was more’n he wanted!

He brought somethin’ for Smidge, tho.  Back at Krissmiss, Wren helped me make her an elephant hat.  But when I came to gift it, she wasn’t home.  An’ Snip seen it, an’ he took it for himself, cuz he loved it so.  I know Smidge didn’t mind.  Like I wouldn’t mind if Cooper loved somethin’ I was given an wanted it himself.  But I wanted to give Smidge a hat too.  So Wren’s been workin’ on somethin’ special…

Hehe!  She’s so stinkin’ cute!  PINK elephant hat.  Perfect for Smidge!  Apparently the ears are a bit big, cuz there was a gust of wind, an’ Smidge kinda almost went flyin’ off!  But she says she doesn’t mind.  She loves it.  I don’t think she’s taken it off since Cooper brought it.

Cooper an’ me went an’ explored the campsite one morning, afore anybody was awake.  I dunno if he’d ever been campin’.  He sure was interested in alla different parts!  So I took him out to the campsite, an’ we explored round a bit.

Cooper found a bag of marshmallows near the fire, so once we got it goin’, he stuck one onna stick an’ started roasting.

I guess marshmallows smell good, an’ the scent carried.  Soon, a whole lotta folk showed up!  An’ we got to singin’, an talkin’, an’ makin’ food, an’ havin’ a good time.  Cooper kept makin’ everybody marshmallows.  He found a good way to get ’em toasted onna outside (but not charred black!) an’ super soft an gooey inna middle.

Pip an’ Amalynn showed up, too.  It was a good day.

An’ there was a holiday!  The country’s birthday, 4th of July.  Alla beans had good food, an’ there were fireworks, an lotsa music.  There were sparklers too, an’ bubbles.  I like sparklers an’ bubbles!

But sparkler time meant it was time for Pip an’ Amalynn an’ Aunty Glenda to go home to Washington.  I don’t like goodbyes.  They aren’t fun. Lotsa hugs, lotsa tears, lotsa sad.  I like hellos so much better.

Smidge an’ me helped Grammy Happy take ’em to the airport, an’ wave goodbye.  I don’t think they like goodbyes either.  Solution:  we gotta find one place where we all can live.  That way the goodbyes aren’t so much like goodbyes, but more like see ya laters.  I wonder if Wren knows how we can get the government to move our house?

Smidge found me loads of kleenex.  Then a bucket.  An’ a mop.  I made a real mess.  Thank you Smidge, for bein’ such a good friend.

An’ I was such a mess, when it came time to go, I ain’t seen Riley jump outta bag!  I didn’ realize she wasn’t with us til we got home.  Then I quick-wrote to Grammy Happy, who wrote back that she’d have Smidge take care of Riley.  But it was the middle of the night, an’ Smidge found Riley on her own inna mornin’, an’ now she kinda wanna keep Riley, or get a pup of her own…  hehe.  I guess that’s somethin’ she’s gotta sort out with Grammy Happy!  At least I know Riley’s safe.

Fun in Washington: Art Show

Early durin’ my trip, Pip took us to Aunty Glenda’s studio, an’ we all messed ’round with paints an’ paper an’ stuff, havin’ some fun.  Then Pip hadda good idea:  we outta have a real, honest-to-goodness, art show!  I was kinda scared.  I ain’t so good at makin’ art, not like Aunty Glenda an’ Pip.  But what I did was all right, an’ she really liked the idea, so I liked it too.  I just wanted to put a li’l cloth over my picture (but I didn’t!!)

Aunty Glenda helped us all get a studio space set up for the show, an’ she brought in some paintings from other artists for decoratin’ the back walls an’ creatin’ conversation an’ stuff.  I think maybe they were all her own art?  They were awful pretty.  But she said they weren’t parta the show, they were just filler.  We sent out invitations an’ got ready.

For an art show, Aunty Glenda said we outta have somethin’ ready to say bout our art an’ what it meant an’ how we made it an’ stuff.  I’d just sorta put colors onna page, tho…  She helped me with thinkin’ bout how to talk bout art, an’ helped me remember how I’d done what I’d done to make it inna picture.  Thanks, Aunty Glenda!  I woulda been lost without you!!

Then Pip hadda good idea:  we were gonna put the show onna internet, an’ get other people to vote!  Pip is super smart.  She said we would put it online after the show night, so alla guests who came would get first looks an’ stuff.

Then…show night!

Pip’s painting was called “Blue Flash on Purple.”  She said she was paintin’ sorta what it felt like to have a sudden idea.  I think it’s pretty cool, both the paintin’ an’ the reason for it!

Amalynn’s paintin’ was called “Journey.”

An’ mine was called “The Hunt.”  (no white cloth, promise)

It was super fun doin’ an art show!  I’m glad Pip had her idea, an’ Aunty Glenda helped us put it together.  Alla people who came really liked it.  Plus I know there was more votin’ an’ talkin’ online, tho I didn’t really pay a lotta attention to who said what or who voted for what.  I think we were all winners with art!

Art is fun.  Last year, Pip an’ me made a different kinda art, outta photo paper an’ ourselves!  Yep, art sure is fun.  But Pip did talk me outta smearin’ paint all over myself an’ rollin’ onna canvas.  She said there were artists who did stuff like that, but it was messy, an’ usually the art didn’t look like much inna end.  I didn’ wanna spend hours pickin’ paint outta my hair (or other parts!), so I didn’ do that kinda art.  This was better.

Thanks, Pip!  Thanks, Autny Glenda!  Thanks, Amalynn!  An’ thanks to alla Woodinville Hittys who came, an alla friends online who voted an’ talked an’ joined inna art show!  Without alla you, it wouldn’t’ve been.

Fun in Washington: Garden Adventure 2

Ok.  So mole huntin’ was a bust.  We went inna garden instead!  Pip wanted to find Aunty Glenda’s fountain.  We walked, an’ turned, an’ walked some more.  There were plants an’ flowers an’ leaves an’ all sortsa things all ’round us, so much it felt like we were lost inna woods (I wanna say jungle, cuz that makes it more adventurous, but it wasn’t really like a jungle.  Pip says Aunty Glenda spends a lotta time clearin’ out weeds an’ takin’ care of alla plants.  Right then, we were surrounded by foxgloves.)

Then I saw ’em again.  The trees.  The awesome japanese maple trees, with alla inviting branches.  An’ I hopped around an’ begged and coaxed, until Amalynn said sure!  she wanna try climbin’ ’em too!  So we went up to ’em, an’ I found out climbin’ these trees wasn’t quite so easy as some other trees I climbed.  Maybe it was alla moss?  I kept slippin’ off.  So Amalynn said she’d give me a boost.

Climbing Trees 01

I kinda sorta think I maybe hurt her a bit, climbin’ up on her shoulders, cuz she grunted a bit and oomphed once, an maybe there was a li’l “ow!”…  I’m awful sorry bout that, Amalynn.  But the boost sure did help, cuz pretty soon, I was up inna tree!

Climbing Trees 02

I love bein’ in trees.  Makes me feel like a bird!  An’ you can see real good, too.  An’ it’s quiet an’ calm an’ green an’ happy.  Trees are good friends.  I reached down to help Amalynn up (cuz it wasn’t really so far up, an’ the worst part was that first bit, with alla moss onna trunk), but she said nah, she didn’t wanna come up after all.

Anyhow, up inna tree, I saw the fountain we was lookin’ for, an’ pointed out which way we hadda go.  It was back through the forest, where we’d just come!  Dunno how Pip got so turned around.  (dawned on me later that I got a really really good friend, cuz she’d come alla way outta way so I could see the japanese maple trees again an’ climb ’em.  Thanks Pip!)

Back through the foxglove forest we went, til we got to the fountain.  Pip said we hadda be careful not to get wet, cuz Aunty Glenda didn’t know we’d come out to the fountain, an’ gettin’ wet would give us away.  Amalynn an’ me said we’d do our best to stay dry.  Then Pip quick scrambled up the fountain to the tallest part, showin’ me how to get there an’ alla best handholds an’ paths.  Wow, but she was fast!

Amalynn said she wasn’t much inna climbin’ mood, she wanna stay down by the pretty pool.  I shoulda stayed an’ kept her company, but there was climbin’ beggin’ to be done, an’ a fountain to scale, an’…  Sorry, Amalynn!

Pip kept shoutin’ down encouragements, an’ tellin’ me which way I outta go for a good climbin’ hold, until then I was up there atta top, where she’d been!  I found a good seat an’ stopped a bit, listenin’ to alla pretty water as it flowed by.  It was kinda like bein’ inna tree, calm an’ peaceful.  Thanks, Pip, for helpin’ me find a way to get up.

Onna way back home, we passed by some pretty purple Irises, an’ Pip stopped for a quick photo shoot.  She does love her purples!  Aunty Glenda has some awful pretty plants, too.  She does good makin’ her garden forest look nice.

Fun in Washington: Moles!

Haley-pup is a Molenator! She went after alla bad moles, diggin’ an’ chasin’ an’ burrowin’ down inna dirt caves they make.  She is somethin’ awesome!  So me an’ Pip an’ Amalynn wanna put our sword practice to good use.  I ain’t seen monsters round here, but moles…yea, there’s moles ‘neath these hills.

We started out right where Haley dug up her mole. Seemed like a good place for startin’, cuz I dunno how to track a mole.  We three went up to her mole hole an’ looked down innit an’ thought. We needed a closer look.  Since Pip didn’t have a sword, she went down, an’ me an’ Amalynn stood guard up top.  (yea…maybe not the smartest idea, sendin’ the girl what ain’t got a sword down where we knew a mole had been…)

So down she went inna hole.  She poked ’round a bit, lookin’ for pawprints an’ scuffle marks that might tell us where alla moles went.  But there wasn’t much down there.  Haley pup had done a good job, clearin’ that mole out, an’ it sure seemed like the others got the message.

Pip made her report: there were no more moles here.  An’ we were sad, cuz it meant there was no fightin’ to be done.  But it was good, too, cuz I dunno if mole fightin’ is the same as monster fightin’, an’ I didn’t wanna see my friends maybe get hurt.  We pulled Pip outta the hole an’ said maybe we outta be done huntin’ for the day.  We’d go find other stuff t’do instead!

Swords up, girls!  Job well done.  Mole patrol: clear.
